AI

What is AI?
Artificial Intelligence, or AI, refers to machines that can simulate tasks that usually require human intelligence to perform. Generative AI is a sub-field of AI that uses a database of data to generate content (which is only as reliable as the data with which it is ‘fed’). AI can, therefore, create humanlike content is various forms—such as written, audio, and visual—but is known to be fallible so must be used with care.

Below are instructions on how to reference artificial intelligence

REFERENCING AI TECHNOLOGIES
Examples of AI and GenAI
-
Grammarly: An AI-powered writing assistant that helps users improve their writing by checking grammar, punctuation, and style, while also providing suggestions for improvement.
-
Quizlet: A study tool that uses AI to help users create flashcards, quizzes, and games for learning and revision.
-
Mendeley: A reference manager and academic social network that uses AI to help users organise their research, collaborate with others, and discover academic literature.
-
ChatGPT: An AI chatbot that generates responses to user questions in a conversational way. It can compose written content, but this content is only as good as the data it draws upon and has been known to make things up.
There are five levels of AI usage that may be permitted for assessment tasks (refer to unit guides and/or your lecturer to ascertain which level can be used for your assessments). Click here for an outline of the levels:
You are required to state the type and extent of AI use in your work at the end of the bibliography. Your use of AI must also be documented. If using AI to edit your work, you must keep a copy of the pre-AI edited version. In some cases, you may need to include a footnote reference of its use (e.g., a direct quote of AI content attained in a discussion with ChatGPT) and/or produce an appendix documenting your use of AI.
Footnote
Note number. AI system/s, description of AI content, URL (Date accessed day/month/year).
1.Open AI’s ChatGPT AI language model, AI response to question from author, https://chatgpt.com/c/34d456ae-41ad-4c1b-b645-19f9226d18a5 (17/02/2023).
If prompt is mentioned in the text of the assignment:
Note number. Name and version of the AI tool, Developer of AI tool, URL (Date content was generated day/month/year).
1.Text generated by ChatGPT-4, OpenAI, https://chatgpt.com/c/34d456ae-41ad-4c1b-b645-19f9226d18a5 (17/02/2023).
If prompt is not mentioned in the text of the assignment:
Note number. Response to “Text Prompt in Quotes”[extended conversations may be summarised into a logical title], Name and version of the AI tool, Developer of AI tool, URL (Date content was generated day/month/year).
1.Response to “What are some different positions academics take towards the two natures of Jesus Christ,” Text generated by ChatGPT-4, OpenAI, https://chatgpt.com/c/34d456ae-41ad-4c1b-b645-19f9226d18a5 (17/02/2023).
Appendix
Some levels of AI usage in assignments require or suggest documenting your AI usage (e.g., copies/screenshots of AI chat transcripts and/or lists of prompts used when interacting with AI) in an appendix. Appendices should be clearly marked as such and added after the bibliography.
Bibliography
AI is not listed in the bibliography. However, a declaration noting the AI tool used and how it was used is necessary (see below). This declaration establishes the work’s academic integrity and outlines in what ways you have used AI in your work. The AI use needs to align with each task’s specified AI usage level.
Technology Use (Levels 2–3)
I acknowledge the use of <insert AI system/s and link to the system> to <insert purpose of AI use – be specific> in <insert stage of the assessment and details regarding your interactions>. <insert note about student record keeping responsibility>
Examples
Level 2 Example
I acknowledge the use of ChatGPT https://chatgpt.com/c/34d456ae-41ad-4c1b-b645-19f9226d18a5 in the editing stage of my essay to suggest how I could improve my academic writing based on one paragraph of my work. I took the suggestions as a guide to improving the clarity of my work; however, no re-writing or re-wording was done by AI. A draft of my work pre-AI can be provided upon request.
Level 3 Example
I acknowledge the use of ChatGPT https://chatgpt.com/c/34d456ae-41ad-4c1b-b645-19f9226d18a5 to help brainstorm ideas for this assignment and suggest academic resources that may be useful based off prompts I gave it. The responses together with my own ideas were used to help direct my research and structure my work. All subsequent work was my own. Appendix 1 contains screenshots of my conversation with AI and a copy of my essay plan prior to AI interaction is available upon request.
Technology Modification and Use (Levels 4–5)
I acknowledge the use of <insert AI system/s and link to the system> to generate <insert materials> which were modified and used <insert stage of the assignment and details regarding use/ modification>. <insert note about student record keeping responsibility>
Example
I acknowledge the use of Synthesia https://www.synthesia.io/ to generate a short video about the different sections of the liturgy, which was then modified to correct content and remove unnecessary detail. This was used in my final oral presentation for illustration purposes only as an example of different ways of delivering content to catechumens. The content used in the video is my own. The prompts used to generate the video can be found in appendix 1.
